Umpqua Community College (UCC) uses a multiple measures approach to determine the most appropriate starting point for students in math and writing. This process considers a student’s academic history, prior coursework, and overall readiness. Placement is designed to help students begin in courses that align with their current skills and educational goals, saving time and supporting steady progress toward completion.

How Placement Works

You may be placed into math and writing courses using any combination of the following:

• High School Transcripts – If you graduated within the past 7 years, your GPA and completed coursework can help determine your placement.
• Standardized Test Scores – Scores like SAT, ACT, Smarter Balanced, or GED may be used if available.
• Prior College Credit – If you’ve already completed college-level math or writing, you may be ready to move ahead without additional steps.
• Advisor-Guided Placement – If other information isn’t available, an advisor will work with you to determine the course level that best fits your current skills and goals.
